Although personal validation is par for the course when you're The Fitness Nerd, sometimes it's especially sweet.
Take, for example, this study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition regarding protein supplementation and weight-lifting. As reported by Reuters, "Neither whey nor soy supplements improved the men's strength, body fat percentage or cholesterol levels beyond the benefits of strength training alone."
The study also showed that weight-lifting did wonders for cholesterol levels.
For years, I've been waffling on that protein powder isn't a magic elixir. It's just protein. Don't get me wrong; alongside fat and carbohydrates, it's one of the three macronutrients the body needs. It's made of up of amino acids, the building blocks of muscle. But just because fitness companies sell it in a tub doesn't make it special. Protein powder is just an efficient way of taking care of your protein requirements.
And if you pick the right brand, it tastes really good blended into a smoothie with bananas and strawberries, which is the real reason most people consume the stuff anyway.
