One of the most frustrating things about losing weight with diet and exercise is that there's always some boob down the street also looking to drop pounds, only they don't bother to work out. Instead, they live on celery and soup for three months and, much to your frustration, they actually lose weight twice as fast as you do.
Proving that your way is better than theirs is as simple as throwing together a quick bikini contest, but if this isn't an option -- although I can't imagine why it wouldn't be -- there's new research from the Mayo Clinic detailing the negative aspects of being "skinny fat." Turns out that over 30 million Americans appear to be thin but actually have way too much visceral fat surrounding their internal organs. In other words, they're fat on the inside.
CBS's favorite medical talking head, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, talks a little about this research.
It's a little annoying that the segment spends more time explaining how to get a body fat test -- which you don't need, by the way -- then it does explaining how to fight that fat. Fortunately, I know the answer. Building lean muscle mass reverses visceral fat accumulation, and there's only one way to do that: exercise.
So you win!
By the way, if you do throw that bikini contest, my social calendar is pretty open for the next few months. I'd be happy to act as celebrity judge. Think of me as the Simon Cowell of weight loss.
Rolling at your bikini judge comment. So cute.
