Sex is the new steroids, apparently.

When I played football in high school, we were always encouraged to avoid pregame hanky-panky, the basic idea being all that pent-up testosterone would make us mean out on the field.

Well, if you've ever lived through a cricket test match, you know that the last thing those guys need is pent-up anything. On the contrary, the game can last five days, so those cricketers are far better served getting their ya-yas out well in advance. This probably explains why Gary Kirsten, coach of India's national cricket team, recently released a document urging players to "go ahead and indulge" when it came to doing da bidness.

From the AFP:
"From a physiological perspective, having sex increases testosterone levels, which cause an increase in strength, energy, aggression and competitiveness," the document said.

"Conversely, not having sex for a period of a few months causes a significant drop in testosterone levels in both males and females, with the corresponding passiveness and decrease in aggression."

So, apparently, Coach Kirsten has access to studies that my football coach, Coach Weinberger, did not. Considering Weinberger used to force feed us massive plates of spaghetti in meat sauce and iceberg lettuce salad with Italian dressing shortly before every game, I'm siding with Kirsten. I would have preferred a pregame cheerleader -- not that a single one of those girls would have given me the time of day, let alone...

Anyway, judging by that grimace, it looks like Kirsten could use a roll in the hay himself. Didn't he get his own memo?
