FDA to regulate tobacco. Sort of.

According The New York Times, the US House of Representatives will be voting Wednesday on "landmark" legislation that gives the Food and Drug Administration broad power to regulate tobacco products.

The legislation would empower the F.D.A. to approve or reject current and proposed tobacco products and ingredients, based on scientific and health findings. But it would not allow a complete ban of tobacco products, or permit the agency to order the complete removal of nicotine. Those were key points in a compromise that engendered support for the legislation from Philip Morris, the nation’s leading cigarette maker.

All I can say is, "So what?" The FDA gets to comment on stuff, but if it's actually dangerous, they can't really do anything about it. I suppose the next thing Congress needs to discuss is legislation that won't prevent murderers from carrying sidearms, but will allow the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to decide which guns they use to kill people.

And speaking of the ATF, I bet they're feeling like chumps right now.
